Legacy system maintenance and integration

Do you have a legacy system that you need to continue to maintain, extend, expand or repurpose? Multibase can help.

CL legacy systems

CL has always been built for economy and sustainability, and it is no surprise to us that many CL systems continue to provide solid service to our customers. In some cases this is many years beyond their expected life. In today's tight IT employment market, you may be finding it a challenge to find programmers as you compete with newer technologies. Or you may be looking for experienced programmers to integrate a new system with your existing legacy application.

This is the need that we've supplied for an increasing number of customers. Some of the services that Multibase is currently providing to customers with long-term legacy CL applications include:

  • Experienced programmers for maintenance, support, and minor enhancements
  • Building a modern web browser front end for an application with a green-screen interface
  • Retrieving data using CLDBLib from CL4 databases for a new application built in a language like Python, Ruby on Rails
  • Integrating a CL4 system with a system acquired through mergers and acquisitions

If you are looking to build a new application but retain the value of your existing investment in a CL system, CLDBLib now opens the CL4 database to application development in other languages. CLDBLib provides an API to languages such as C, .NET, Java, Python, Perl, Ruby, PHP and Pascal. Using any of these languages, you can now share your CL4 data with any application and database with any other language and database of your choice. It is therefore possible to develop a new system in a current technology to run alongside an existing CL4 application.

We offer monthly Support and Maintenance contracts, or prepaid blocks of development hours, at discounted rates. Both Support and Maintenance contracts, and Prepaid billing, are fully integrated into our billing and reporting system. Some contract customers also have their own dedicated support email address.

Windows systems

The demand for development and hosting on the Windows platform continues to increase, and we continue to respond by growing this part of the business. Our specialist Microsoft development team is currently completing requirements to become a Microsoft Certified Partner. The number of applications and web sites hosted on the Windows platform continues to increase, with new server space being opened to customer applications.

Multibase can develop a modern web front end for an existing system, provide remote access to a secure internal legacy system, or repurpose an existing system for operation in a hosted environment.

Case study - retaining your investment

Recently as a result of a company merger, Multibase took on the challenge with our customer to rebuild, within 6 months, a system containing 15 years of development in a technology no longer supported. Both companies had substantial existing investment in their technical systems and business processes.

In order to realise the cost benefits of the merger, it was necessary to bring together the backend systems of the two businesses into one. At the same time, in order to cause as little disruption as possible to day to day business, and to retain the investment in existing human business processes by removing the need for substantial retraining, it was decided that both "front ends" would be retained.

The task was then to duplicate an existing front end in a new, supported technology (.NET) that would run the backend of another similar - but different - system, and to run the other front end alongside. Both "front ends" now look different - but run on the same back end.
